Floating licenses - what are the advantages?

June 01 2018

Professional software providers can provide access to their products in a variety of ways. For example, a provider usually offers them for a specific price, whether paid once or through a membership over a certain period of time. Some memberships are complicated and claim to be cost-efficient. Others are simple, convenient but more expensive in the long term. The subscriptions for OnPOZ with floating licenses are simple and keep the costs down in every possible scenario.

There are several widely used options: one-time fee, monthly fee, user licenses, device licenses and concurrent (floating) licenses. One-time licenses usually cost a lot of money upfront. The periodic (usually monthly) licenses break the cost down and are much more flexible. Their price depends on how many users can access the service – the cost for one user would be lower than the cost for a company with twenty users. However, this model requires a separate license for each individual user, even if only a few of them use the service at the same time.

The best option of all seem to be the floating licenses - they can be shared dynamically between all members of a given company on any device they need. For example, every member of your family can watch Netflix on any screen he wants, as long as they don’t exceed a total of 3 screens at a time. This solution is widely used for many online services and desktop applications. Each device uses one license and it is easy to count how many licenses remain available. Unfortunately, that method works well only if the devices are constantly connected to the network.

Taking GNSS positions is usually performed on the field, away from the office and sometimes on places with no network coverage. Working offline makes them “invisible” for the provider of the service. So how do we know if the customer users one smartphone or five? The answer is simple: once the data is synchronized with the cloud, we can count the number of devices used on the field and match it to his subscription plan. All necessary verifications are handled internally and our customers don’t need to worry about software keys and annoying licensing procedures.

Depending o the workload, additional licences can be purchased or cancelled at any given moment. They can be shared across teams and devices, allowing our customers to keep the costs down while using the resources needed for any large or small project.
